The past couple of weeks, we have been busy making over our master bedroom. When we first moved in, we painted a blue accent wall but we never had the time to finish painting the remaining three walls. We were getting sick of just looking at the plain white walls so we finally made time to paint it. I always am a bit nervous to pick out paint colors. In my mind, I know what I want and I can picture what it will look like but in real life I always second guess myself on if the colors with coordinate well with each other. I finally picked the color called Roman Plaster. It is a mix between light grey and tan. As I started painting the walls, I knew that I picked the right color! It looks so good! Not too dark but not too light and really goes well with the blue accent wall.

If painting the walls was not enough, I repainted our furniture to match. Since our marriage, we have had mismatched bedroom furniture and it was time to make it too good. We have been wanting a long dresser with lots of drawers so we have been searching ksl.com for a good deal. About a month ago, we found one and we snatched it up! So now we had our dresser and it was time to get to refinishing it. I was able to use some free paint I scored from the Ace Hardware promo and some oops paint I found at Home Depot for 6.00 (gallon sized!) to paint both dressers, an end table and mirror!

As I got to painting the long dresser, I realized that it was going to turn out a chocolate brown instead of a deep dark brown. I was a bit bummed at first but then I had an idea to get some Ebony stain and apply it over the brown paint….. and it WORKED!!! By doing that it turned the chocolate brown into the deep brown that I wanted and also made it have an antique look to it as well! I was so excited with how it turned out! To save some money,  I used the hardware that came with it and just spray painted them silver then polyed them. After getting that project done, I moved on to painting Mark’s standing dresser, an end table that was given to us when we lived in Logan, and a mirror we picked up for $5. It was a lot of work but well worth the time. We just love how each piece turned out and now we have a bedroom set that matches but didn’t drain our pocket book…..YEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mark’s Dresser

On to the next project…adding accent colors to the room. I picked out a yellow called Lemon Grass and Navy Blue for my accent colors. I searched high and low for some Lemon grass colored material but I couldn’t find any anywhere!!! One day, I was brainstorming ideas and I remembered that I had a maternity shirt in that exact color! I pulled it out of the box and looked it over. It was the perfect size to recover one of my throw pillows! So I pulled out my sewing supplies and got to work cutting, sewing, and making ruffles! I just love ruffles!!!!

For my other accent pillows, I used some white material I picked up on clearance years ago just sitting in my material box and I cut out a stencil using my Silhouette. I placed the stencil on the material and sprayed it with the Lemon Grass color (I found that at Home Depot! I was so excited that they made it in a spray paint!!). After drying I peeled the stencil off to reveal a perfect damask pattern in the exact color I wanted!!!! I then got to sewing and was able to recover two more pillows.

For my last pillow, I got some navy blue felt and made a flower pillow. It was a bit tedious cutting out 50+ circles and then sewing them on the fabric but I got through it and it turned out just beautifully!!!

Now it was on to decor! I took our lamps and spray painted them yellow and bought some cylinder lamp shades. Totally changed the appears and mood of the room! I then took an old window and hung it above our bed with a wreath. It was lacking something so I decided that it needed some yellow shutters! I searched ksl.com daily until I found a steal of a deal on shutters! Oh how I love ksl! Once I got them home I pulled out my trusty spray paint and got to work. I was so excited when I finally was able to hang them up! I absolutely love how it turned out!!! Now when Mark and I go into our room, it feels almost like a retreat! With a little hard work and creativity, we were able to create a little getaway in our own home!!!
