My first big remodel project of the new year was Sariah’s bedroom. When we moved in we just set up the crib in the baby’s room and put Sariah in it. Needless to say she has had a very hard time adjusting to moving which has manifested in not sleeping well at night. I wanted to quickly get her room done so she could have a place of her own. The room we chose for her needed to be repainted. It was painted half green and half blue. The colors were not at all appealing and they needed to go, FAST!!
I had a hard time getting motivated to do this makeover but once I got started my decorating drive came back. I chose to do a very subtle light yellow for the walls. It is called “Soft Cream.” When I started painting the room, I wondered if the color was going to be too light but I decided to just finish it and see how I liked after. It took a full day to paint that blasted room! The green and the blue were just a pain to cover! It took 3 good solid coats of paint to finally cover the old color. Needless to say by the end of the night, I was so ready to be done! After all the paint dried the color deepened a bit more and I am quite happy with how it turned out. It really helps to brighten the room and is such a good base color for the bright accent colors I picked.
We decided to make the transition from crib to toddler bed so I had fun making a cute new bedspread and pillowcase for the bed. I found the cutest little bird fabric in teal, bright pink, yellow and orange. It went perfect with the bird and owl theme I picked for her room.
My next project was to adhere the big vinyl tree to the wall. I found it for a great price on Amazon and it turned out perfect! It was exactly what I wanted to fill up some wall space. I then moved on to hanging some paper pom poms above her bed. It was the perfect accent to the room!

Before moving to the house, I enlisted the help of my neighbor who refinishes furniture. I wanted to have a teal dresser for Sariah’s room and she found the perfect one and painted it for me! I was so excited that I didn’t have to paint it myself. This pregnant body is making it hard to do things that I normally could do and it was nice not having to worry about it. The dresser turned out beautifully and adds such a fun pop of color!!
For the next phase, I made some ruffle curtains. After pricing out fabric and decided that I didn’t want to pay that much for curtains I decided to buy a white Flat Queen sheet at Walmart for $14.00 and add 3 rows of fabric ruffles the bottom. All I did was cut the sheet in half and hem the one side before I started on the ruffles. That was a nice time saver!!! I only wished that I had a serger to help make the ruffles go faster! Definitely will be the next thing I invest in! The curtains turned out so cute and I just love all the ruffles!!
I then moved on to the lamp. I found the cute owl lamp at Walmart. It was a little more than what I wanted to pay for a lamp but it was just too perfect and cute! I bought a plain white drum lamp shade and decided to paint a chevron pattern on it. I just used good old painters tape to make the design and then painted it. It was a pretty quick and easy project and turned out perfect!
My final decoration to the room was the wall decor above the dresser. I had several old frames that I wanted to paint different bright colors. I also had a old mirror that I got from my Grandma Rowley that I wanted to use. It took me a little bit to finally pick the colors that I wanted to do each one. I ended up picking to do the mirror a bright pink, one frame teal, the other purple and the “S” a bright yellow. I took the glass out of one frame and used it to frame the vinyl saying, “Be.You.tiful.” I framed a printout of “You are my sunshine” with the other frame. Everything turned out perfectly and then I had fun arranging them on the wall!
It took me a little over two weeks to pull the room together but it was so worth the time and effort! I absolutely love it and so does Sariah! She was so excited to have a room just for her and a little “Big Girl Bed” to sleep in. It has taken her a little bit to adjust to sleeping in the bed but she loves it now. I think giving her this room and making it special for her has really helped with the transition of moving. Every time I go into her room, I just smile. You can’t help but be happy in such a bright and fun place. I sure hope that she will enjoy it for the next few years!
