A few years ago, I inherited my Grandma Rowley’s piano. I have always wanted it and it was such a sweet surprise when she gave it to me! It has sat at my parents house since then. We had no way to get it up to our house plus no where to put it until now.
In August, our neighbor, a piano restorer, was going down to St. George to fix a piano and stopped by my parents house and picked up our piano for us! He is the nicest guy! I was so excited to finally get it up here! I even got a little emotional as the guys brought it in the garage. My grandma means the world to me! And to have something of hers in my home makes my heart so happy!
The piano was in rough shape. Some of the keys wouldn’t go down all the way but we quickly learned that it was a pencil that rolled down under the keys. That was a relief and we now had a fully working piano.
I asked our neighbor if it was ok to paint a piano. He said yes and told me that he would be happy to help me take it apart to do so. Well, it sat in our garage until I was told by him that it would need to get in the house before winter. I had planned to do it next Spring but that changed. So I went to work on taking apart as many things as I could and then got his help to do the rest. I decided to paint it a neutral color so that it would be a more versatile piece. I first sanded it to ruff up the surface. I wanted to keep the dents and knicks to add to the antique feel. Next, I spray primed each piece and then sprayed it an Heirloom White. This process took much longer than I wanted because I am a mom to three cute kids and other things come first.
When I got some spare time, I glazed each piece. This seemed to take the longest. After glazing, I sealed it with polyurethane. It turned out even more beautiful then I imagined! I get cold chills looking at it and I love that it reminds me of my sweet grandma. It will help fill our home with beautiful music! I couldn’t be more happy with it!
