We couldn’t be more excited to get started on redoing our garden area! We have such a big garden space in our backyard and it was just too overwhelming and lots and lots and lots of work that we just can’t do with 4 little kids. Needless to say we had lots and lots of weeds that were just overtaking our garden. So what do we do? I researched lots of different ways to garden and discovered that I loved the idea of box gardens for these reasons: #1: They have nice clean lines and look pretty! #2: Easy to control weeds #3 Yields more product in a smaller space. My friend Rachel told me about an instructional DVD and book called Square Foot Gardening and so I borrowed it from her and that is how we came to do our garden!
Mark and I built three 4×4 square garden boxes on a Saturday and I built the brick fence garden which is divided into 2 ft sections all along the fence. Not an easy task! Those bricks are heavy!! Anyway, this is where I planted all of the vine plants. We will be growing them vertically. We still need to install the fence behind them so they can climb. The square box gardens are divided into 16 1ft squares and filled with a mix of peat moss, compost, and vermiculite. Each square hold a different type of plant/seeds. By doing it this way, we are supposed to cut down on watering and yield more fruits and veggies then with the traditional row garden. It has taken us a few weeks to get it all set up and ready to go but I am so excited to see if it works! Doesn’t it look pretty?! Our next thing to do is finish taking out the weed/strawberry island and level the ground to get it ready to fill with pea gravel. It will be so much nicer than having to walk in dirt all of the time!
