I debated on whether to get a spray paint gun to paint our cabinets or a cabinet transformation kit. Both were great choices but in the end I chose the transformation kit to keep costs down. We bought one small Rust-o-leum Cabinet kit for $79. It comes with the deglosser, paint, glaze, top coat, and rags. All we had to get was the paint brushes! That helped to keep under budget. We chose an antique white for our cabinets. Since our kitchen is smaller we wanted it to feel really open, bright, and charming.
Once the cabinets were placed, I began taking off all the doors and drawers. When done, I was a bit overwhelmed when I looked at the huge pile of things that would need to be painted. I didn’t dwell too much on that thought and got to work every spare moment I got. Which usually was during nap times or when Mark was home from work. The whole cabinet transformation took me just over a week to finish.
The first step required using the deglosser and scrubbing each piece and then wiping it down with a damp cloth. Next came painting. When I started painting I was nervous about the color. It was a bright white! Not what I wanted. I researched to see if the glaze would change the color to antique white and found evidence that it would so i kept painting, praying all the while that it would turn out. This part proved to be the longest! I was getting a bit anxious and my lower back and knees were killing me at this point. It’s hard to admit that I’m getting older 🙁 But, I persevered and finished the job!
Antiquing was a relief. The glaze did in fact change the bright white to the antique white we were wanting. YES!!! We couldn’t be more happy with the result.
The top coat was quick to apply and dried really fast which made the process so much easier! These kinds of projects are tedious and when doing them I always think why I started it because its just do much work! It’s the finally product that gives me the high. Yes, it was hard but I pushed through and made something old into something beautiful. That’s a feeling that I LOVE!!!
We were so excited to get them installed and to put the hardware on them! We bought a little tool that makes measuring the hole much easier and less frustrating. Mark drilled while I installed. They turned out even better than I could have imagined!!! I love the color and the dimension that the glaze added!!!
